ウクライナに対するロシアの軍事侵攻が続き、子どもたちを含む多くの人たちの尊い命が奪われ、あるいは極めて危険な状況にあることに深い悲しみを覚えます。そして為政者が国際法に明らかに違反する暴力を引き起こし、世界を不安と混乱に陥れていることに強い怒りを感じます。
　科学と言論に基づく平和な社会を希求し、学問を追究してきた大学として、あらゆる戦争を非難するとともに、改めてこのような状況が生まれる現実を直視し、平和な社会づくりに貢献する研究と教育を行っていかなければならないという思いを強めています。

　茨城大学で学んできたウクライナ出身のみなさん、ロシア出身のみなさん。その家族や友人のみなさん。どうか希望を失わないでください。
　みなさんが、突然始まった望まぬ戦争により、命を脅かされ、経済的?社会的な混乱あるいは差別的な眼差しに苦しみ、今この瞬間も不安な闇の中にいることを、私たちは知っています。私たちはあなた方とともにあります。この闇の先に希望の光があることをともに願い、できる限りの行動をします。

　そして、本学の学生、教職員のみなさん。
　多くのみなさんが、今起きていることに対して心を痛め、祈りを捧げていることかと思います。平和を願う活動に参加したり、生活インフラを奪われた人たちのために寄附をしたり、学会の声明発信に努めたりするなど、それぞれができることを考え、行動している人たちがいることを私も認識しており、心強く感じています。

　私たちは、平和な社会の構築に向けた学術の力を信じる者として、今起きている事態を見つめ、こうした惨禍を終わらせて持続的な世界を実現するための活動に一層努めなければなりません。この危機に対して一刻も早く平和な解決がもたらされることを切に願います。

Message from the President on the Situation in Ukraine

　I am deeply saddened by the continuing Russian military invasion against Ukraine, which has caused many people, including children, to lose their precious lives or to face extremely dangerous situations. I am also outraged that the regime is causing violence in clear violation of international law and plunging the world into unrest and chaos.

　As a university that has sought a peaceful society based on science and discourse and has pursued academic studies, we condemn all wars and once again face the reality of such a situation. This reinforces our conviction that we must conduct research and education that will contribute to the creation of a peaceful society.

　To all of you from Ukraine and Russia who have studied at Ibaraki University, and to your families and friends, we would like to ask you to not lose hope.
　We know that you are currently living in an uncertain darkness, suffering from the threat to your lives, economic and social turmoil, and discriminatory stares due to the sudden and unwanted war that has started. We are with you. We hope that there will be light of hope beyond this darkness, and we will do all we can to help.

　I would also like to give a message to all the students and faculty of Ibaraki University.
　I am sure that many of you are heartbroken over what is happening and are praying for this situation to end. I am also aware and encouraged that there are people who are coming up with and doing whatever is possible, whether it is participating in activities for peace, making donations for those who have been deprived of their living infrastructure, or making efforts to send out statements from your academic societies.

　As believers in the power of academia to construct peaceful societies, we must look at what is happening now and work even harder to end these horrors and create a sustainable world. We sincerely hope that a peaceful resolution to this crisis can be brought about as soon as possible.
